Gao Jie is a quantum metrology expert, researcher, and doctoral supervisor, academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering, and famous physicist and chief professor in condensed matter physics at Sichuan University. Gao was born in Jinan, Shandong Province on June 14, 1937 and graduated from the physics department of Peking University in September 1962. From 1962 to 2000, he worked successively at the National Institute of Metrology of P. R. China (NIM) and its branch and National Institute of Measurement and Testing Technology (NIMTT). He became a researcher in 1987 and was elected as a member of Committee for Weights and Measures (CIPM) at Paris Metric Convention Conference in June 1993. He used to serve as vice director of NIMTT and director of State Scientific and Technological Commission, and now is a member of the Disciplinary Appraisal Panel (physics) of Academic Degree Committee of the State Council, vice president of Sichuan Association for Science and Technology, president of Sichuan Physics Society, and vice director of Sichuan University Academic Commission.
Gao has long been engaged in researches in the fields of metrology and condensed physics. He led the Standard Measurement of AC Loss and Magnetic Property of Silicon Steel (China's earliest national standard for magnetic property of silicon steel) in Beijing from 1963 to 1968, completed the national key project of Supervision and Maintenance of State Volt Datum With Superconduction Josephson Effect, which won second prize of the State Scientific and Technological Progress Award in 1985. From October 1987 to October 1990, Gao worked as a visiting research fellow in the American National Standards Institute and solved a variety of problems including static discharge breakdown and superconduction integrated circuit leakage, and won the NIST award of the U.S. Department of Commerce. In comparison with research results of more than 10 countries including the U.S., Japan, the U.K. and France, the study on Josephson node array voltage datum led by Gao in 1993 had the minimum uncertainty and was the closest to the central value, and won second prize of the State Scientific and Technological Progress Award. He was recognized as a National Young and Middle-aged Expert with Outstanding Contribution in 1988 and a National Advanced Worker by the State Council in April 2000.
Gao was elected as a member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering in 1999.
Guo Boling was born in October 1936 and is an ethnic of Han from Longyan, Fujian Province. He is a member of the Communist Party of China, computational mathematics expert, and graduated from the Mathematics Department of Fudan University in 1958 and also served as a teaching assistant, research assistant, associate researcher and director of research lab successively. At present Guo is a researcher at the Institute of Applied Physics and Computational Mathematics, doctoral supervisor, and judge of the Mathematics Panel of National Natural Science Foundation of China. In November 2001, Guo was elected to be an academician of Mathematics and Physics Division of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
In the aspect of nonlinear evolution equation, Guo has made systematical and deep studies for some important nonlinear evolution equations arising from mechanics and physics, including Landau-Lifshitz and Benjamin-Ono equation. For such equations, Guo develops systematic and profound math theory about the global solvability of large initial value, uniqueness, regularity, asymptotic behavior, and blow-up phenomenon of solution. In terms of infinite dimensional dynamical system, based on studies on a series of important infinite dimensional dynamical systems, he proposed theories about the existence of global attractor, inertial manifold and approximate inertial manifold as well as fine estimate of fractal dimensions, and created a new method to prove the existence of strong and compact attractors. Then he used discretization method to make theoretical analysis and value evaluations and showed us the structure and picture of attractors. Guo has published more than 240 papers (over 100 papers are included in SCI) in important journals at home and abroad and seven monographs. Guo was granted with National Natural Science Award (first prize for group and third prize for individual) and won first prize of Science & Technology Progress Award from Commission for Science, Technology and Industry for National Defense (for individual) twice in 1994 and 1998.
Guo used to serve as a director of the Chinese Mathematical Society (1988-1995) and now occupies the position of standing director and vice chairman of Beijing Mathematical Society (1996- ), and also is employed as the editorial board member and associate chief editor for journals including Journal of Partial Differential Equations, Journal of Computational Mathematics, Journal of Mathematical Study, and Beijing Mathematics.
Li Peicheng, academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, part-time professor of Northwest A&F University, professor and doctoral supervisor at Chang'an University, and the director of International Water Resource and Environment Research Training Center in Arid and Semiarid Areas (sponsored by Sino-German cooperation). Li was born in Qian County, Shaanxi Province on the 26th day of the twelfth lunar month, 1934, graduated from Department of Water Conservancy of Northwest Agriculture College in 1956, and remained at the college as a teacher after graduation. From 1963 to 1966, Li studied and obtained his candidate degree at hydrogeology and engineering geology department of Moscow Geological Prospecting Institute. He also used to work and teach in former Shaanxi Polytechnic University and Xi'an Jiaotong University, and further studied and conducted cooperative research in Beijing Foreign Studies University, China Academy of Agricultural Sciences and Leningrad Kalinin Polytechnic Institute.
During his working period in Northwest Agricultural University, Li was the vice president of the university, the director and founder of the first agricultural research training center in arid and semiarid areas in China, member of the Science and Technology Committee of the Ministry of Agriculture and Shaanxi Provincial Decision-Making and Consultation Committee. In 1992, he was transferred to the original Xi'an Institute of Geology, which was incorporated into Chang'an University later and still works there. During this working period, Li established International Water Resource and Environment Research Training Center in Arid and Semiarid Areas (sponsored by Sino-German cooperation and approved by the Ministry of Land and Resources) and Xi'an Institute of Geology, Geological Engineering Investigation Institute (approved by the Ministry of Construction). He held the posts of the first director and president of these two institutes respectively. Moreover, Li is also an invited member of Shaanxi Provincial Decision-Making and Consultation Committee, an expert of underground water expert panel of the Ministry of Water Resources, and a consultant of China Geological Survey of the Ministry of Land and Resources.
Li has long been engaged in theoretical research and engineering practice in agricultural water and soil engineering, water resources and environment, groundwater exploitation, utilization and seepage, land improvement, and other fields in Northwest China and Loess Plateau. With pragmatic approach, dedication to work and education, Li is a model for students and has accomplished fruitful achievements in scientific study and talent cultivation.
In 1964, Li came up with the isolated-well theory and corresponding formulas about the calculation of unsteady seepage flow of well groups in the aquifer and made further research to put up 13 solution models satisfying various hydrogeological conditions and well operation methods, contributing to solving major difficulties in the well group drainage and irrigation project design; In the early 1970s, Li together with other researchers successfully developed one radial well suitable for loess seepage flow principle, which was popularized to over 10 provinces, broke traditional concept "loess cannot constitute aquifer", and brought him National Science Conference Award in 1978; The light well used for both drainage and irrigation developed by him won the fourth prize of National Invention Prize. In 1993, The Location Test of Loess Plateau Comprehensive Control - the Construction of Zaozigou Experimental District, one Seventh Five-year Plan research project led by him won the first prize of National Science & Technology Progress Award; In 1995, Li completed the research on project Short- and Medium-Term Best Water Supply Strategy of Xi'an City - Combination of Water From Narrows and Use of Underground Water and Surface Water, which helped relieve water scarcity problem in Xi'an City; In 1999, the project led by Li and cooperated with other experts and professors from Xi'an University of Technology and Northwest A&F University - Research of Optimization and Allocation of Water Supply System in Xi'an City made systematic and in-depth theoretical and practice study about the optimization and allocation of water supply system in Xi'an city and was recognized as reaching international advanced level; In January 4, 2003, the preliminary study of national key project - Science and Technology Action Plan for Graceful Landscape With Green Mountains and Clean and Limpid Rivers (GLGMCR) in Northwest China led by him passed the acceptance of the Ministry of Science and Technology; At present, Li is in charge of another national key project - Strategic Studies and Construction of GLGMCR Test Zones of Different Ecosystems in Northwest China; He is also making unremitting efforts to study on Reappearance of Eights Rivers Surrounding Chang'an City and trying to reveal correlation and optimum interactive mode of human activities, water dynamics, ecosystem change, and social and economic development.
Li has nurtured over 50 masters and doctors hitherto, among which nine students became the doctoral supervisors. The doctoral dissertation of Feng Guozhang supervised by him was selected as National Excellent Doctoral Dissertation. Li has published 10 monographs and national textbooks and over 80 papers. He has won four national awards and six provincial and ministerial awards in succession. He was recognized as a National Young and Middle-aged Expert with Outstanding Contribution and became a State Council Expert for Special Allowance in 1991, Xi'an City Model Worker in 1996, Shaanxi Teachers' Ethics Model in 1997, Shaanxi Excellent Doctoral Supervisor in 1998, National Excellent Scientific and Technological Worker in 2001, academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering in 2003, and National Teachers' Ethics Advanced Individual in 2004.
Sun Tieheng is an expert in pollution ecology and environmental engineering, academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, president and professor of Shenyang University, director of Shenyang Key Laboratory of Environmental Engineering, academic committee director of Shenyang Institute of Applied Ecology of Chinese Academy of Sciences, researcher, and a doctoral supervisor. Sun is from Haicheng City, Liaoning Province and was born in March 22, 1938. At present, he is a member of the Chinese National Committee for Man and the Biosphere, a member of Liaoning Provincial Government Decision-Making and Consultation Committee, vice chairman of the Ecological Society of China, vice chairman of Soil Science Society of China, vice president of Liaoning Association of Science and Technology, president of Shenyang Association of Science and Technology, vice chairman of Liaoning Society for Environmental Sciences, and chairman of Shenyang Society for Environmental Sciences. In addition, Sun is also a professor at the Graduate School of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Harbin Institute of Technology, Northeastern University, Shanghai Normal University, Shenyang Jianzhu University, Shenyang Agricultural University, Shenyang Normal University, Anhui Normal University, and Shandong Institute of Architecture and Civil Engineering, and chief editor of Chinese Journal of Ecology, etc. In 2001, Sun was elected as an academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering.
Sun graduated from Shenyang Agricultural University in 1963 and then worked at Shenyang Institute of Applied Ecology of Chinese Academy of Sciences at the same year. From 1981 to 1983, Sun worked as a visiting scholar at the University of Tokyo. From 1994 to 2000, Sun was the director of Shenyang Institute of Applied Ecology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
Sun has been long engaged in research fields of pollution ecology, environmental biology and ecological restoration technology. He discovered a new research field of soil-plant system combined pollution ecology and made outstanding contribution in establishing and developing polluted ecological environmental engineering technology system with focus on wastewater land treatment and polluted soil bioremediation:
1Prevention and treatment of soil pollution: conducting study on ecological process of organic and inorganic pollutants in the soil-plant system and developing soil combined pollution ecology in China.
2Establishing the wastewater land treatment technological system based on the purification performance of soil and assimilative capacity of environment, and providing technological support for domestic wastewater treatment policy in combination with manual and natural treatment.
3Achieving important results with regard to soil eco-toxicological diagnosis and specific engineering bacteria establishment, bio-slurry reaction and prepared bed by conducting research on the cleaning and bioremediation of soil polluted with petroleum, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and heavy metal.
Sun has won 15 Science & Technology Progress Award prizes from the country, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and national ministries, among which Innovation/Substitute Technology Research on City Wastewater Treatment won the National Science & Technology Progress Award (second prize) and Science & Technology Progress Award of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (first prize); Ecological Engineering Planning and Design Scheme of Typical Community of Yanshan Petrochemical Corporation won Science & Technology Progress Award of Chinese Academy of Sciences (second prize); Environmental Impact Assessment and Wastewater Treatment Scheme of Shaerhure District of Huolinhe Mine Area won National Science & Technology Progress Award (third prize) and Science & Technology Progress Award of Chinese Academy of Sciences (second prize). Sun won the National Prize for Outstanding Contribution to Environmental Protection, and was recognized as a National Young and Middle-aged Expert With Outstanding Contribution, Excellent Doctoral Supervisor of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Liaoning and Shenyang Excellent Scientific and Technological Expert, Excellent Scientific and Technological Worker, Model Worker, and won Liaoning May 1st Labor Medal. When Sun was the director and Party Secretary of Shenyang Institute of Applied Ecology of Chinese Academy of Sciences, he had an outstanding performance and was praised a lot. The team he led was also selected as the advanced leading group of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Sun has published 13 monographs and translations (he is the chief editor of four books), such as Pollution Ecology, Technical Guidelines for City Wastewater Land Treatment, Systematic Research for City Wastewater Land Treatment, Environment Impact and Ecological Engineering Due to Mining Area Development in Grasslands, etc.He has also published over 150 papers including Treatment of Domestic Wastewater by an Underground Capillary Seepage System, An innovative Land Treatment System for Urban Wastewater and Practice in China, Research Fronts and Prospects of Pollution Ecology, Wastewater Ecological Treatment Approach System and Development Trend,Development in Bioremediation Research and Application, etc. Nine national patents have been applied and authorized, and over 30 doctors, masters and post-doctorates have been nurtured by Sun.
Sun is in charge of over 20 programs, including key programs supported by the National Natural Science Fund, National key R & D programs, major innovation programs of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and international cooperative projects (with Japan, Germany, South Korea, North Korea, and Russia, and other countries).
